A Midsummer Night's Dream

Anthony Colbert was a highly accomplished illustrator. This is a powerful black and white illustration for 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' by William Shakespeare. It is signed by the artist and he has captioned the reverse with the title.

Size 450mm d x 340mm w ( 17 3/4'' x 13 3/8'' )

Anthony Colbert went to Worthing College of Art and afterwards managed to combine national service and Farnham Art School for 18 months. In the mid 1950's he then worked for commercial studios in Brighton before presenting a portfolio to the Observer in 1959 where he was taken on to the staff under David Astor's editorship. The Observer magazine became a showcase for his strong emotive style in black and white which led him on to illustrative work for many publications including Twentieth Century Magazine, the Guardian, the Times Literary and Educational Supplements, the New Statesman, Radio Times and New Society. He illustrated many books for the publishers Penguin, Macmillan, the Folio Society and in the 1970's he produced a series of memorable images to advertise the Hungarian wine Bull's Blood. Anthony died in 2007
